A fascia / the fascial system — how the term changed

Fascia was once understood primarily as something surrounding other things. Increasingly, it is also studied as something connecting them. Both senses are still in use, and current anatomical work keeps them deliberately distinct.

A fascia

A discrete, dissectible sheet or sheath of connective tissue — the more traditional morphological and anatomical definition.

The fascial system

The broader, continuous network of collagen-containing connective tissues throughout the body, connecting and separating structures while participating in force transmission and movement between tissues.
